A note from the Director of Admissions:
To get to know the College of Engineering I encourage everyone to take a tour of our beautiful campus. There is absolutely no substitute for a campus visit. Student-led tours of the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences can show you our numerous resources and friendly atmosphere. You will get the chance to meet with current students to get the inside story about what it is like at the College of Engineering. Also, you will get the chance to have a face to face conversation with me about your goals and ambitions, admission to the program, scholarships, and other other concerns or questions you might have.
- Jane Dorman
The College of Engineering is one of 11 Colleges that comprise The University of Iowa. With educational courses dating back over 100 years, the College today has an enrollment of about 1,600 students -- 1,200 of whom are undergraduates. About 68% of undergraduate enrollment comes from the state of Iowa, with another 29% attending from contiguous states. Women make up about 20% of undergraduates -- higher than the national average.
The College teaches disciplines in
- Biomedical
- Chemical and Biochemical
- Civil and Environmental
- Electrical and Computer
- Industrial
- Mechanical
All six undergraduate engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
The College is recognized for its personalized size and focused mission -- coupled with the resources of a large research university. Many of our students come to The University of Iowa because they know with confidence that they want to be engineers, but they want to be something more, too. At Iowa, they can combine engineering with the University's strong liberal arts focus -- with natural strengths in international studies, writing and communications, health sciences, business, law, arts, and humanities. This makes The University of Iowa uniquely qualified to provide talented students the type of broad technological education demanded in a rapidly changing world. For example, one of many unique traits of the College is that it is the first in the U.S. to offer a Technological Entrepreneurship Certificate with an engineering degree.
Our faculty members are both classroom- and research-focused. Over 85% of our undergraduate courses (counting lectures and discussion sessions) in engineering are taught by tenured and tenure-track faculty. There are also many opportunities for undergraduate students to do research with faculty.
The College of Engineering excels nationally and internationally in several specialty and interdisciplinary research areas. Students work very closely with faculty on computer-aided design and simulation, human factors, environmental health solutions, biotechnology, medical imaging, and hydraulics and water/air resources, among many other fascinating areas. The College has an established global reputation for its four formal research units -- the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Center for Computer-Aided Design; IIHR - Hydroscience & Engineering (formerly the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research); and the Iowa Spine Research Center.
Whether you are a prospective student, parent, alumnus, researcher, faculty member, government or industry decision maker - or just browsing - we invite you to explore the College of Engineering further, and learn what it may have to offer you. Discover your potential and apply online today!

Admission Requirements for First-Year Engineering Students
- Students are admitted directly into the College of Engineering as entering first-year students.
- Incoming freshmen are guaranteed admission into the College of Engineering if they have all of the following characteristics:
- 25+ ACT composite score
- 25+ ACT math score
- class rank in the top 30%
- no high school unit deficiencies
- Students not meeting one or several of these requirements are encouraged to apply for individual review, which involves sending a personal statement and letter of recommendation from a math and/or science teacher.
Regent Admission Index
Students from Iowa high schools planning to begin their studies in fall 2009 or later must have a Regent Admission Index score of at least 245 and take the minimum number of required high school courses to qualify for automatic admission to Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at The University of Iowa. Students who achieve a score less than 245 will be considered for admission on an individual basis.
The index combines four factors that strongly predict success at regent universities: ACT or SAT test score, high school rank, high school cumulative grade-point average, and the number of completed high school core courses.
