Gregs Thomopulos has over 40 years of experience in the engineering and construction industry and is currently the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Stanley Consultants, Inc. Stanley Consultants provides engineering, environmental, and construction services worldwide and operates from 17 offices in the United States and 11 offices overseas. The organization, founded in 1913, has successfully completed more than 23,000 engagements in all 50 states and 98 countries and is ranked among the largest engineering companies in the United States.
Mr. Thomopulos received a B.S. degree (With Highest Distinction) in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas in 1965, and an M.S. degree in Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966. He was awarded Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa, by Teikyo Marycrest University, Davenport, Iowa, in 1996.
Mr. Thomopulos joined Stanley Consultants in 1965 as an Engineering Intern and was assigned overseas in 1968, spending 10 years on various assignments. He was elected Vice President, International Division, in 1978 and was responsible for all of the firm’s operations outside the United States, an assignment that took him to over 35 countries – primarily in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean – overseeing the design and construction of infrastructure, energy, and environmental projects. He was elected President of the firm in 1987 and became CEO in 1998.
A Licensed Professional Engineer in 14 States and Puerto Rico, Mr. Thomopulos is a Fellow of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is also a member of the Iowa Engineering Society and the National Society of Professional Engineers. He has served on the Advisory Boards of the University of Iowa College of Engineering; The Iowa Institute of Hydraulics Research; the University of Kansas School of Engineering; and the International Center for Water Resources at Central State University. He was a member of the 2006-07 U.S. Department of State Overseas Building Operations Industry Advisory Panel. He also served as a member of the board of directors for Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Iowa and South Dakota from 1999 to 2008.
Mr. Thomopulos has served on numerous community and professional committees including the Board of Goodwill Industries of Southeast Iowa, the Committee of Fellows of ACEC, and the Senior Executive Group of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). He is Vice Chair of ACEC and member of the Executive Committee, a member and Past Chair of the International Committee of ACEC; and Vice President of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) and a member of the Executive Committee. He currently is a member of the University of Iowa Foundation Board of Directors.
Mr. Thomopulos has received numerous honors and awards and was selected by Engineering News-Record as its “21st Century World Citizen,” in the July 26, 2004, cover story.
