Our
Mission:
The
ACE Academy seeks to engage talented students in more in-depth study
of math and science. We hope to provide opportunities for a diverse
group of students in the Quad Cities and Iowa City, including those
who are typically underrepresented in the field of engineering.
We wish to make a positive difference in the lives of these students
and eventually to the work force in the Quad Cities and Iowa City.
Program:
Quad
City and Iowa City Area High School
Students (students completing 9th,
10th, or 11th grade by June 2003)
Goals:
- Leadership
Support
- We
support our local Quad City and Iowa City schools in the development
of leaders who will mirror the diversity in our community.
- Extended
Learning Opportunities
- We
provide interesting, high-level reasoning activities not offered
in a traditional classroom setting.
- Engineering
Coalition Building
- We
establish partnerships with local Quad City and Iowa City schools,
industries, businesses, community programs and The University
of Iowa College of Engineering.
- Policy
and Commitment
- We
offer support and opportunities to Quad City and Iowa City
youth.
Objectives:
our
students will:

more interested in math and science
- Learn
how math and science concepts are used in various careers
- Become
familiar with a university campus
- Share
experiences with teachers and students upon returning from The
ACE Academy
- Serve
as leaders in their schools' math and science clubs and organizations
- Have
engineer mentors for continued guidance and encouragement
- Further
their education after high school graduation

Requirements:
- Recommendation
from a teacher at a participating school
- Completed
ACE Academy application
- Individual
shows high academic potential
- High
school student, Grades 9- 11
- Strong
diversity representation of students, who are typically underrepresented
in technical careers
Cost:
The
University of Iowa College of Engineering will cover the majority
of the cost of the five-day program; students selected to attend
the residential high school program are asked to pay $150.
This fee will be waived for students who qualify for free or reduced
lunch.
