Richard H. Stanley

Richard H. Stanley is a professional engineer, businessman, and world citizen. He is Chair Emeritus of The Stanley Group of companies which provide engineering, environmental, and construction services, worldwide. He is Chair of The Stanley Foundation, a private operating foundation conducting policy and educational programs that foster a secure peace with freedom and justice. He is retired Vice Chair of the Board of HNI Corporation, a Fortune 1000 manufacturer and marketer of office furniture and hearth products, and has served as a director of several non-profit and for-profit corporations.
Born in Muscatine, Iowa, Mr. Stanley received Bachelor's degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1955 and a Master of Science in Sanitary Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1963.
He is a registered professional engineer; Past President of the American Council of Engineering Companies; Past President of the Iowa Engineering Society; Past President of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Iowa; Past Chair of the National Construction Industry Council; 28-year member and Past Chair of the Engineering College Industrial Advisory Council at Iowa State University, and member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American Society for Engineering Education.
He is a frequent chair, presenter, and participant at conferences on world affairs and global issues. He has authored numerous articles and papers published in professional and technical journals and presented at professional and technical meetings.
In 2009, Stanley received the national Tau Beta Pi Distinguished Alumnus Award and the National Society of Professional Engineers most prestigious award for having made outstanding contributions to the engineering professon, the public welfare, or humankind. Previous recipients include former U.S. President Herbert Hoover.
Stanley also has been awarded the Hoover Medal by the Hoover Medal Board of Award; the Anson Marston Medal and the Professional Achievement Citation from the College of Engineering, Iowa State University; the Distinguished Award of Merit and the Community Service Award of the American Consulting Engineers Council; the Diamond Jubilee Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineering; the Herbert Hoover Centennial and the Distinguished Service Awards from the Iowa Engineering Society; the Harry S. Truman Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Community Colleges; the Award for Citizen Diplomacy from the National Council for International Visitors; and the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from the Univerisity of Iowa Alumni Association. Mr. Stanley is listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, and Who's Who in the Midwest.
Mr. Stanley is active in varied church, community, and civic activities. He is Chair of Unity Health System, Past President of the Muscatine Chamber of Commerce, Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Northeast-Midwest Institute, and President of the Muscatine Health Support Foundation.
Mr. Stanley is the son of the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy charter member C. Maxwell Stanley.
