Undergraduate Program: Overview (BME)

The undergraduate curriculum in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa combines a rigorous engineering education with training in the basic life and applied medical sciences. The program emphasizes materials, solid mechanics, computer science and quantitative measurement, mathematical modeling, and analysis of biological systems and processes. The faculty strive to develop materials that allow students to aquire analytical and computational tools needed for innovative work in the physical, biological, and engineering sciences. The curriculum stresses theoretical concepts, hypothesis formulation and testing, experimental design issues, data aquisition, and computational approaches to data analysis and model interpretation.

The curriculum culminates in a two-semester capstone design experience, during which each senior completes a technical design project under the direction of a faculty supervisor.
