University of Iowa mechanical engineering student Brennen Wears is conducting research in EPSCoR researcher Hongtao Ding’s UI Laser Materials Processing Lab. Wears, in conjunction with intern Christ’s research, collects fiberglass repair data that will be applied to wind turbine manufacturing. He also has a project on the side, partnering with the UI medical department in order to redesign a certain device used in radiation therapy.
Wears admits that he is not as passionate as some of the other interns about wind turbines; however, he is interested in finding better renewable energy sources such as wind power. His main passion is design, and he hopes to find a career with room to work freely and creatively.
“I’d like to do something in design, but as far as what field or what company I’d like to work for – it’s up in the air," he said. "If I wound up in the wind turbine industry with a position in design, I’m sure I’d love it.”
Wears has also worked for Fisher Controls International LLC, as part of a co-op, is a teaching assistant for the course “Design for Manufacturing”, and works in the College of Engineering machine shop. He founded and is current president of the UI Track and Field Club.
