For nearly a century, The University of Iowa has been preparing students for careers in chemical engineering. Today, with approximately 150 undergraduate and 35 graduate students, the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering is well known as one of the best small programs nationwide. Our research program, which focuses substantially on current public and environmental concerns, is headed by internationally recognized leaders in biocatalysis, atmospheric chemistry and modeling, development of alternative fuels, and new polymeric materials. The largest component of our graduate program is in biochemical engineering.
The Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Department at The University of Iowa provides an outstanding venue for graduate studies. Our major research areas include biochemical engineering, separation science, polymers, and environmental science. Our research is funded by a variety of sources, including NSF, NIH, NASA, USDA, and industrial sponsors. The department's close affiliations with The University of Iowa’s Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing, the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, and the Center for Fundamentals and Applications of Photopolymerization provide unique educational and research opportunities for graduate students. These centers allow students to establish multi-disciplinary research interactions with students and faculty from across the campus as well as industrial and academic scientists from across the country and around the world. In addition, much of our research involves direct interaction with the University's Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, and our faculty and students have access to a wide variety of University research facilities. In summary, the Department is committed to a strong graduate program that provides high-quality, individualized educational opportunities that will serve its graduates throughout their careers.
The intimate size of our department provides the ideal atmosphere for our high-achieving students, enabling them to interact with nearly every faculty member on a daily basis. Such close contact helps students develop a broad perspective on chemical engineering as a discipline and gives them confidence as they make the transition from being engineering students to becoming academic colleagues.
