ECE Department Mission

The ECE Department contributes to the three-fold mission of the College and University to create, preserve, and disseminate knowledge by maintaining strong and highly interactive undergraduate and graduate programs and by carrying out high quality research in a limited number of focused areas. In addition the Department provides the College of Engineering and University with unique and vital expertise in several important and emerging areas of technology.

Electrical Engineering Program Educational Objectives

The goal of our Electrical Engineering program is to produce electrical engineers capable of effectively using the scientific and technical knowledge developed as undergraduates for the betterment of society. The problem-solving, teamwork, and oral communications skills developed by these engineers while at Iowa will also contribute to achieving this goal.

To meet this over-arching goal, our specific objectives are:

1. To graduate electrical engineers who contribute to society in a broad range of careers. This is achieved through experiencing Iowa's unique combination of a small college atmosphere coupled with the resources of a comprehensive liberal arts institution, and personalized contact with ECE Departmental faculty.

2. To graduate electrical engineers who function professionally in an increasingly international and rapidly changing world. This is achieved by making Iowa undergraduates aware of cultural differences and the importance of lifelong learning.

3. To graduate electrical engineers who effectively understand, use, and develop modern electrical and computer engineering technologies and concepts. This is achieved through completing Iowa's rigorous series of theory, laboratory, and design courses.

4. To graduate electrical engineers who achieve success throughout their careers. This success is achieved by internalizing the specialized electrical and computer engineering background and concepts developed during their undergraduate curriculum.
