Like teaching,
world-renowned engineering research is alive and well on Iowa campuses.
College engineers design user-friendly communications devices and
fish- friendly hydroelectric dams. They create virtual reality software
that can walk you through a complex molecule or drive you down an
icy highway. And they develop techniques for inspecting the skin of
an airplane or the, spine of a human being. But engineering at Iowa
universities is more than just bright ideas. Solutions engineered
at the two campuses reach out to the world. Through partnerships with
Iowa communities and businesses, the ideas researched, designed, and
tested on campus are constantly being turned into reality.
- Research expenditures
for both colleges annually total more than $78 million - generated
by faculty grants and contracts
- During the last
five years, the colleges have conducted research with more than
300 Iowa companies
- Research at Iowa's engineering
colleges contributes significantly to the state's three economic
initiatives--advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and information
technology.
