Rebecca Machen

Director of Tutoring and Academic Advisor

My two main roles in the College of Engineering are Director of Tutoring and Academic Advisor. As the Director of Tutoring, I am able to manage and maintain student success tools within the College of Engineering. Our Tutoring Center is located in 3124 SC and is open Sunday through Thursday from 6:00-9:00 PM. The center has over 40 engineering tutors across all of our majors that are ready to assist students in need of help.  Whether it's refreshing students on course material or offering assistance with homework problems, the Engineering Tutoring Center is the place to come get your work done.

In my role as an Academic Advisor, I meet with first-year and second-year engineering students to review what courses are required for graduation. I enjoy hearing about the experiences students have on campus and how they are growing as professionals in the field of engineering. The role also allows me to directly inform first-generation and transfer students on tips to success in college, which relates to my background in higher education.

I am originally from Mokena, Illinois which is a town southwest of Chicago. I received my bachelor's degree in Mathematics with a Secondary Education Certification from Millikin University. I came to Iowa to teach AP Calculus at Muscatine High School and fell in love with the state of Iowa. My passion for education will always be an important part of my life, and I am thankful for my opportunity to teach at Kirkwood Community College. In addition to my various responsibilities, I am a graduate student in the Higher Education and Student Affairs program in the College of Education. As both a student and employee of the University of Iowa, I can finally say I am officially a Hawkeye!
