ITS Wireless Replacement Completed - Need Feedback

As we announced, ITS replaced the wireless network access points (APs) to provide more robust coverage in SC. All of the new APs have been installed as of 7/31/14, some in different places than the ones they replaced, and many APs have been added. ITS would like feedback on how well the new APs are working. ITS can make configuration changes, move or add APs, and make other adjustment if they know where coverage is weak or inconsistent. File Server Maintenance 7/25/14, 8pm - 8am 7/26

ECS will take the home directory and share file server down for maintenance on Friday, 25 July, beginning at 8pm. The file server will be back up by 8am, Saturday, 26 July. All home and share files will be unavailable during this time.

Account System Mistaken Notices: Account Inactivation

Early Saturday morning on June 7 an error in a data processing system triggered a flood of incorrect "Engineering Account Inactivation--First Notice" email messages. Please disregard these notices. Your account access and data are not at risk, and you need not take any action.

We are working on correcting the problem and will post an update here. We apologize for any confusion it may have caused.

File Server Upgrade 6/13/14 Postponed

ECS will upgrade the home directory and share file server sometime this summer. This downtime had been scheduled for Friday, 13 June, 9pm until 8am Saturday, 14 June.


Electrical Shutdown in SC 6/1/14 - Updated

University Operations has scheduled an electrical shutdown for the Seamans Center on Sunday, 1 June 2014, from 7-9:00am. This shutdown will affect the air handlers, elevators, air complressors, and pumps in SC. This shutdown may affect all power in the building. Best practice is to close all files and quiesce all jobs.

Web Server Down 5/23, 10pm-midnight

ETC needs to complete the work on the web server that was started last week. The web server will be down from 10pm - midnight on Friday, 23 May.

Intermittent Downtime 7:30am 26 May

The Windows file server will be down intermittently for maintenance beginning at 7:30am on Monday, 26 May 2014. If you are working on home directory or share files on 5/26, save your work often and be prepared to be interrupted from time to time. Normal service should be restored in the afternoon.

Engineering Web Server Down 5/16/14 5:30-8:30pm

ECS will take the engineering web server down for maintenance beginning at 5:30pm on Friday, 16 May. For the first couple hours of the maintenance window you will be able to view web pages. After that and until the web server is back up, there will be no access to engineering web pages.

Firefox v.29.0.1 Fixes Blank PDF Pages

The new 29.0.1 version of Firefox fixes the problem with PDF pages that got printed as blank pages. If your machine is administered and Firefox was not running last night, you have the update. To update on your own, close Firefox and go to the Symantec Management Agent in the system tray. On the Software Deliver tab, you'll see that Mozilla Firefox 29.0.1 is Not compliant... Highlight Mozilla FIrefox 29.0.1, which makes it show up as the Application Task in the left column. Click on that Firefox link and version  29.0.1 will be installed.

If you are running Firefox 29 and PDF pages are printing as blanks, go to Options | Applications  (illustration on left below) and find Portable Document Format (PDF). Change the action from Preview in Firefox to Use Adobe Acrobat (illustration on right below).
