About Us

The College of Engineering continues to remain a national leader in its inclusion effort at the doctorate level. The percentage of underrepresented minorities in the U.S. doctorate student pool (African American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino) is now over 25%. This is one of the highest percentages of U.S. underrepresented minorities in Carnegie Research I doctoral engineering programs in the United States and it is demographically representative of our Nation.
The success of this effort comes from aggressive recruiting efforts of our faculty in conjunction with the Graduate College and our NSF Iowa Regents AGEP program. Fellowship support was provided by the Graduate College, the College’s Department of Education GAANN Fellowship Grant, the Iowa Regents AGEP Program and GEM.

Ph.D. Student: Ricardo E. Colon Hernandez
I was born in Puerto Rico, and since I was little, I have been intrigued and amazed by electronic things, and took them apart to learn how they worked. When it came time to choose a major for college, electrical engineering was the right choice, and I knew that someday I wanted to be a professor. The Ethnic Inclusion Effort for Iowa Engineering has given me the opportunity to make a contribution to science and knowledge, and get one step closer to my goal.
