Previous Events and Seminars:

•A Noches De Ciencias/Family Science Nights event was held on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at the Seamans Center to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.  The event was sponsored by the National and UI Student Chapter of Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and Ethnic Inclusion Effort for Iowa Engineering along with an in-kind contribution from Hy-Vee-Waterfront Drive.  This event engaged the local Hispanic community by providing a relaxed environment where families had fun learned about science and engineering through experiments while also receiving information about college admissions in a bilingual setting.  Members of SHPE, NSBE, MESA, NOBCChE, Engineering Student Ambassadors, and current UI math undergraduates provided assistance working with the students and their parents on the science experiments and by provided tours of the Seamans Center.  Faculty members Peeples, Aurand, and Carrica were on-hand to answer questions from parents.

The 2009 Field of Dreams Math Alliance added an Engineering Open House this year which was held on Friday, September 25, 2009.  A pizza dinner/social mixer accompanied by tours of Seamans Center and CCAD were provided to the nearly 100 undergraduates from across the country and was co-sponsored by Ethnic Inclusion Effort for Iowa Engineering and Iowa State University's College of Engineering.   Members of SHPE, NSBE, MESA, and NOBCChE as well as Engineering Student Ambassadors all provided their time in helping these students feel welcome.

Ph.D. in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, August 2008: Angela McIver
I worked on a project that used microbial cells to produce chemicals in an environmentally safe manner. My project was in collaboration with the Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry department in the College of Pharmacy. Without the Ethnic Inclusion for Iowa, I would not have known about the many opportunities Iowa has to offer.
