Student Development

The College is developing a comprehensive Cultural Competency Certificate Program for Iowa engineers to better perform in a global society. The students completing the program will develop their own personal toolset to remain culturally sensitive while on technical projects.
The certificate program includes a number of steps:
• First-Year Seminar Presentations
• Identification of a Technical Cultural Immersion Experience outside of the student’s cultural ‘comfort zone’
• Pre-Immersion Preparation
• Cross-Cultural Experiential Immersion through projects in both national and international settings
• Post Immersion Toolbox development

Ph.D. Student: Angela McIver
I am currently working on a project that uses microbial cells to produce chemicals in an environmentally safe manner. My project is in collaboration with the Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry department in the College of Pharmacy. Without the Ethnic Inclusion for Iowa, I would not have known about the many opportunities Iowa has to offer.
