Admission Requirements and Data on First-Year Students

Admission Requirements:

  • First-year students: Applicants still in high school (including students who are taking college courses while still in high school)
  • Transfer students: Applicants who have attended another college or university
  • International students: Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents
  • Returning students: Applicants who previously attended the University of Iowa and who would like to resume their studies

We highly encourage prospective students to join us for one of our many campus visit opportunities to see all that the College of Engineering has to offer.

The fall 2012 engineering first-year students are smart, diverse, & high-achieving:

  • # = 436
  • 24% are women (compared to the national average of 17%)
  • 7.8% are underrepresented minority students
  • 3.0% are international students
  • Average ACT composite = 28
  • Average ACT math subscore = 29
  • Average High School GPA = 3.83
  • Average Regents Admission Index (RAI) = 319
  • 9.3% are class valedictorians; 25.3% are in the top 5% of their high school graduating class
  • 19.6% are 1st generation college students
  • Half are from Iowa (49.1%) and half are from other states or countries
  • 50.9% were directly admitted into the university honors program
  • 69.3% received at least one university or engineering merit scholarship
