My primary responsibilities are to recruit academically talented engineering students and guide them through their first year in the College of Engineering. More specifically, I determine who gets admitted into the College of Engineering, meet with individual students as well as groups of prospective students and their parents, host Explore Engineering@Iowa programs, and assist in the development of publications. I also supervise a team of student ambassadors, teach an Engineering Success class required for all first-year engineering students, provide activities to help students transition well into college, and work with the People in Engineering (PIE) living/learning community.
I was born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and I'm a devoted Packer fan. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse with a double major in business and psychology, and then from Northern Illinois University with a master's degree in counseling. I'm an "honorary" rather than a degreed engineer! In addition to Green Bay, I've lived in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, DeKalb & Sterling, Illinois, and then I moved to Iowa City during the "Great Flood of 1993." I've worked at the University of Iowa since 1993 and in the College of Engineering since 1997. I have three children: Katrina, a hospital intensive care unit social worker who lives in Chicagoland with her husband Grant, a high school teacher (in Rockford), and my wonderful grandson Jack; Patrick, an avid softball player, who lives and works in West Des Moines; and Ryan, an Iowa student athlete who runs track for the Hawkeyes. We also have a Maltese poodle named Coby.
