Dr. Richard E. Emmert
BS 1951 in Chemical Engineering
Dr. Richard E. Emmert is a
chemical engineer and retired businessman whose expertise in chemical
reaction technology and mass transfer has been recognized by many
career honors. Most of Dr. Emmert's professional career was with the
DuPont Company for whom he served 34 years, retiring as Vice President
Electronics. He served as Vice President-Corporate Plans, General
Manager-Textile Fibers, Director-Instrument Products,Research and
Development Director-Pigments, Director-Engineering Technology and
Materials Research, and in numerous manufacturing and research
development positions. In 1988, Dr. Emmert was named Executive
Director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers from which he
retired 1996. There he oversaw the staff and operations of the
52,000 member organization. He is a native of Iowa City and has
always given of his time and talent to The University of Iowa and the
College of Engineering. After receiving his Bachelor of Science
degree in Chemical
Engineering with highest distinction at the UI in 1951, Dr. Emmert went on to
earn his master's and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from
the University of Delaware. He has
been honored with both schools' Distinguished Alumni Awards and with
election to the National Academy of
Engineering, the highest professional honor that the engineering
profession can bestow upon an individual.
Dr. Emmert holds an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Manhattan College. He serves on the boards of the University of Delaware Research Foundation and the College of Engineering Advisory Council, Villanova Collage of Engineering Advisory Board, Chemical Heritage Foundation, and Christiania Care Health System. He also is a member of The University of Iowa College of Engineering Development Council. He served as President of the University of Delaware Research Foundation, President of the Delaware Foundation for Physical Education, and Vice-chair of the Stanton, DE, School Board. He also was a member of the Board of Directors for the University of Iowa Alumni Association and has been chaired advisory boards for the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Delaware as well as having served as a member of the UI College of Engineering Advisory Board.
