The University of Iowa Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will hold the fifth annual Richard L. Valentine Distinguished Lecture from 3:30 to 4:20 p.m. Thursday, October 16, in 101 Becker Communications Studies Building on the UI Campus. The talk is free and open to the public.

Pedro Alvarez, George R. Brown Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University and former Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa, will present on "Nanotechnology-Enabled Water Treatment: A Vision to Enable Decentralized Water Treatment and Reuse."

His research focuses on environmental sustainability through bioremediation of contaminated aquifers, fate and transport of toxic chemicals, water footprint of biofuels, microbial-plant interactions, water treatment and reuse, and environmental implications and applications of nanotechnology.

The Valentine Distinguished Lecture honors Richard L. Valentine, UI professor of civil and environmental engineering.
