Berkowitz Wins UI Business Model Competition
Ben Berkowitz, PhD student in Biomedical Engineering, was selected as the winner of the University of Iowa Business Model Competition March 28th at the Hawkeye Innovation Summit.
He presented his team's development of the Iowa SmartSwitch and the business model that will be used to market and distribute the device.
The Iowa SmartSwitch is an electronic device that helps patients communicate with their caregivers when they otherwise couldn't; for instance, an intensive care patient who normally couldn't move or speak due to paralysis and intubation could use a microphone plugged into the Iowa SmartSwitch to call a nurse by making sounds with his or her tongue or lips.
As the winner of the competition, Berkowitz and his team earned the opportunity to compete and represent the University among 40 international teams competing for seed money and recognition in front of a panel of renowned business professors and entrepreneurs. The International Business Model Competition will be held May 1-3 at Brigham Young University, Provo, UT.
