Greg Carmichael, Karl Kammermeyer Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering in the University of Iowa College of Engineering and co-director of the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research (CGRER), delivered the keynote address at the International Environmental Cooperation Symposium Nov 9.

Organized and hosted by the governor of Fukuoka, Japan, the symposium was established to build cooperative links in the region aimed at resolving transnational environmental issues.

Carmichael addressed an audience of about 300 national, state and local officials on the topic of the globalization of air pollution. Carmichael -- together with officials from China's and South Korea's environmental agencies and Japan's state department -- discussed the need for new frameworks for environmental cooperation between China, South Korea and Japan.

Earlier in November, Carmichael addressed the international Beijing Forum on the subjects of air pollution and climate change as one of 300 invited scholars.
