K.K. Choi, Roy J. Carver Professor in Mechanical Engineering, who also is professor in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, World Class University Program (WCU) at Seoul National University, will present “Are Deterministic Engineering Optimum Designs Reliable?” June 16 as part of WCU Distinguished Lecture Series.

The World Class University (WCU) project is designed to meet Korea’s critical need to foster research in key growth-generating fields, and to ensure quality in the development of next-generation human resources. Under the national subsidy initiative, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) has set out to nurture new promising fields in basic sciences, and develop inter-disciplinary studies that promote knowledge-based services and new industries.

The project invites world-class scholars and researchers to develop world-class academic programs and departments in Korean universities, which will ultimately lead to the creation of world-class institutions of higher education in Korea. In other words, by recruiting and retaining international scholars who possess advanced research capacities, the Korean government intends to bring innovation to the education and research environment of Korean universities, thus transforming them into research-oriented institutions with globally competitive standards.
