Engineering Alumna Slayton Named UI Pediatric Dentistry Head

College of Engineering alumna Rebecca Lynn Slayton, D.D.S., Ph.D., (MS 1983 in industrial engineering) has been named head of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry Department of Pediatric Dentistry.
Slayton, whose appointment was effective May 28, succeeds James Wefel, Ph.D., who has served as interim head of the department since March 2007.
Slayton comes to the UI from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in Seattle, where she was an associate professor and director of graduate programs in the university's Department of Pediatric Dentistry. She also served as interim clinical director of the Department of Dental Medicine at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle.
Her research interests include the molecular epidemiology of dental caries (tooth decay), caries risk assessment, and genetics education in dentistry. Slayton has published research articles on a variety of topics, including the genetics of tooth decay, dental insurance and its impact on pediatric oral health, and issues in dental education and curricula. She serves on scientific program and examination committees for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, respectively. Slayton was inducted into the American College of Dentists in 2006.
Slayton received a master's degree in industrial engineering at the UI before entering dental school at Iowa. She graduated from the UI College of Dentistry in 1992, and in 1998 she earned a certificate in pediatric dentistry as well as a doctorate in genetics. Slayton served as a UI faculty member in the pediatric dentistry department from 1998-2002.
