Graduate College commencement is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at Carver Hawkeye Arena. UI President Sally Mason will confer degrees.
College of Engineering undergraduate commencement will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 18 at Hancher Auditorium. Commencement speaker will be Dean Oskvig, (BS 1972 in civil engineering), president and CEO of Black & Veatch Energy, Overland Park, KS. Andrej Lenert will give the graduating senior address. UI President Sally Mason will confer degrees.
A special brunch for graduating seniors and their families will precede commencement from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Seamans Center.
Graduate College and College of Engineering commencement ceremonies will be broadcast live on UITV. All commencement events will be streamed live over the Internet at UITV's Web site mms://winmedia.uiowa.edu/events. UITV will also replay commencement ceremonies at a later date and provide archive streaming files. For more information, visit http://www.its.uiowa.edu/tns/uitvschedule/Commencement.htm.
2. NADS Receives NHTSA Grant to Explore Technology with the Potential to Assist Older Drivers
A federal grant will help University of Iowa researchers determine whether modern technology can help older drivers to drive more safely.
Researchers at the National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS) -- a research and teaching unit of the UI College of Engineering -- have received a $604,432 grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to explore technology with the potential to assist older drivers.
The 18-month study will be directed by Robert Wallace, M.D., and James Torner, professors of epidemiology in the UI College of Public Health, and Dawn Marshall, researcher at the NADS, using drivers age 65 and older. Older drivers constitute not only the fastest growing segments of the population and the driving public, but also represent an age group with an elevated risk of fatalities per vehicle mile traveled.
The study will examine in-vehicle systems that warn older drivers when they are about to run a stop sign or red light and assist them in negotiating intersections after coming to a stop. The grant also calls for NHTSA to secure a small NADS simulator, called a "MiniSim," for use at NHTSA headquarters to support ongoing NADS and NHTSA collaborative research efforts.
Omar Ahmad, NADS assistant director, said that the study is the latest research activity in a long line of cooperative projects between the university and NHTSA.
Located at the University of Iowa Research Park, NADS is the most sophisticated research-driving simulator in the world. Developed for NHTSA, it offers the highest fidelity real-time driving simulation experience. The NADS mission is to conduct and support simulator-based research and motor vehicle systems research with the goal of enhancing the safety of U.S. highways and improving the safety and productivity of the vehicle-manufacturing sector. The NADS vision is to achieve these goals in collaboration with academia, government, and industry through the advancement of multidisciplinary simulation science and technology.
3. Carmichael Receives $100,000 NASA Grant
Greg Carmichael, Karl Kammermeyer Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, associate dean for graduate programs and research, and co-director of the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, has received a $100,394 grant from the National Aeronatics & Space Administration. Carmichael will conduct dynamic updating of emissions by systematic integration of bottom-up activities and satellite-based top-down constraints to support air quality forecasting and analysis.
Carmichael, who joined the college in 1978, has research expertise in atmospheric transport chemistry modeling, and high speed computing and sensitivity analysis. His present research interests are in air quality and atmospheric chemistry modeling, and data assimilation, chemical weather forecasting.
4. Registration Continues for Alumni Reunion Weekend
The College of Engineering will celebrate Alumni Reunion Weekend June 7-8.
Planned activities for Friday include an update on the College by Dean P. Barry Butler, an introduction of the new Institute for Biomedical Imaging by co-director Milan Sonka, professor of electrical and computer engineering, a remembrance of the ASTP group that attended the University during WWII and a tour of NADS.
The collegiate dinner on June 8 will include induction of new members into the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy (DEAA) and the Legacy of Iowa Engineering.
New inductees into the DEAA include William Ashton (BS 1962, MS 1963 civil engineering) and Dr. Hong-Yuan Lee (MS 1982, PhD 1984 civil engineering).
Frederick G. Higbee, Thomas Farrell and Wayne Paulson will be inducted into the Legacy of Iowa Engineering.
For a complete schedule and to register, go to http://www.engineering.uiowa.edu/reunion/index.php.
