1. Engineering Students Participate in FURF 2009

Three Engineering students will present their research at the Fall Undergraduate Research Festival (FURF) December 3 in the second floor atrium of the University Capitol Centre.

In the natural sciences category, Brenton J. Steinmann, a senior majoring in biomedical engineering, will present “Evaluation of a Compliance Chamber Designed to Improve the Performance of an Artificial Lung.” His mentor is William R. Lynch of the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

In the mathematics and engineering category, Charles N. Hatz, a senior majoring in civil engineering, will present “Road User Study Analysis.” Olga Jennings, a senior majoring in chemical engineering, will present “High Quality Polyester Synthesis from the Renewable Resource Furfural.” Julie Jessop, associate professor of chemical and biochemical engineering, is her mentor. Chris Comer (MS 2007, PhD 2008 chemical and biochemical engineering) collaborated on the research.

The conference is co-hosted by the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates, University Honors Program, Office of the Vice President for Research, Office of the Provost, and the Graduate College.

2. Stanier Receives Grant for Nitrate Study

Charles Stanier, assistant professor of chemical and biochemical engineering and assistant research engineer at IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering, received a $135,802 grant for “Data Analysis and Modeling of the LADCO Winter Nitrate Study.”

3. CSS Warns of Upcoming Outage November 23

Computer Systems Support advises that, on Monday, November 23, from 6:00-8:00 a.m., connections from the Seamans Center to the campus network and the Internet, as well as wireless connections, will be unavailable. Networking within the Seamans Center will not be affected. Connections out of or into the Seamans Center will not be available during this downtime.

4. Applications for Margaret P. Benson Memorial Scholarship Due February 12

The Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC) at The University of Iowa invites applications for the Margaret P. Benson Memorial Scholarship program for the upcoming (2010-11) academic year. Application deadline is February 12, 2010.

Created by a designated bequest to the University of Iowa Foundation, the Margaret P. Benson Memorial Scholarship recognizes qualified female applicants who demonstrate financial need and are committed to women's issues, diversity, and social activism.  One or two awards are available each year.  Awards generally range from $1000 to $2000 per academic year to be applied toward tuition, fees, living expenses, or books. The scholarship is presented at the UI's annual Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women (http://www.uiowa.edu/celebrationofexcellence/).

The Margaret P. Benson Memorial Scholarship is administered and selected by individuals affiliated with the Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa. The Center is a diverse community dedicated to fostering women's individual empowerment and systemic solutions to all forms of oppression.

Information about eligibility and application procedures is available on the WRAC web site at www.uiowa.edu/~wrac/scholarship.shtml.
