Graduates Recognized at Commencement

The College of Engineering undergraduate commencement ceremony was held Saturday, December 21, at MacBride Auditorium. Kelly Ortberg, chief executive officer and president of Rockwell Collins, gave the charge to the graduates.

Jacob Kirpes of West Des Moines, IA, gave the graduating senior address.

UI Executive Vice President and Provost P. Barry Butler conferred 64 degrees.

The Outstanding Graduating Senior Award was presented on behalf of the Engineering Student Council to Jacob Kirpes. Kirpes, a double major in finance and industrial engineering; was a resident assistant, a teaching assistant, held leadership positions in several student organizations and was employed in several internship positions.

This fall, the graduating seniors from each program selected a faculty member to be recognized at commencement for their excellence in teaching and dedication to student learning. Awards were presented to Madhavan Raghavan, professor of biomedical engineering; Eric Nuxoll, assistant professor of chemical and biochemical engineering; Wilfrid Nixon, professor of civil and environmental engineering; Anton Kruger, professor of electrical and computer engineering; Yong Chen, associate professor of industrial engineering and Albert Ratner, associate professor of mechanical engineering.

Emily Warner graduated with distinction.

Graduating with honors were Kevin Credille, Andy Maurer, Jacob Kirpes.

Twenty-four candidates graduated with at least one minor: mathematics (11); business administration (9); computer science (1); chemistry (2); Leisure studies (1); and Art (1). One candidate earned a double minor.

Other accomplishments of this graduating class include:
Nineteen received credit for co-op or internship experiences
Four were presidents of engineering student organizations
Two completed the requirements to become grand challenge scholars
Two participated in the Student Leadership Institute
Adam Heckelsmiller, Robert Hofer and Ian McQuillan received their commissions as officers in the US Army

Graduate College Commencement was held Friday, December 20. Thirteen MS degrees were awarded and 16 PhD degrees in engineering were awarded.
