Sadie Greiner (BS 1995 civil engineering, MBA 2009), associate director for planning, design and construction in University of Iowa Facilities Management, and Katie Coates (BS 2003 industrial engineering), senior lean consultant, Rockwell Collins, Inc., Cedar Rapids, IA, have been named “Forty Under 40” award honorees for 2009 by the Corridor Business Journal of Iowa City/Cedar Rapids. The award is given annually to recognize and thank leaders under the age of 40 who, early in their careers, have made a significant impact in their business or community or both.  They were honored at a ceremony October 27 at the Cedar Rapids Marriott.

Greiner oversees the UI contract construction program, which has awarded more than $100 million in contracts annually over the past five years. She leads a staff of project managers, construction managers, and administrative support staff managing a workload that includes more than 75 flood recovery projects. During the 2008 flood, Greiner led efforts to engineer and construct the physical protection of the campus, calling on the contracting and engineering community for emergency assistance.  Following the flood she worked to ensure the recovery of UI's largest residence hall, three classroom buildings, and the library in time for the start of fall semester. Greiner has worked as an engineer and project manager in Facilities Management since 1999.

Coates has been employed with Rockwell Collins, Inc. since 2003. As a senior lean electronics consultant she has traveled to 16 different Rockwell Collins facilities in the U.S., Mexico and Germany. She recently spent a year at the Heidelberg, Germany facility overseeing the transition of a manufacturing product line from Iowa to Germany. While in Germany she developed and implemented a Site Lean Six Sigma Plan for the entire facility from the ground up. She also worked with site leadership to develop an overall Vision, Roadmap, and Scorecard for the facility. Her work in Heidelberg was recently featured in Horizons Magazine. Coates currently serves as one of four team members of the Site Maturity Team designated to assess 14 Operations facilities located around the world. She serves as the focal point and lead consultant for the Lean/Quality sections of the team and is integral in developing a new assessment document and evaluation process for these facilities.
