This issue celebrates the 40th anniversary of biomedical engineering at The University of Iowa and features:

  • The forward thinking of founder Kwan Rim who realized the potential for establishing a biomedical engineering program in close proximity to the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.  The department now has research ties to more than 20 departments and research centers across campus.
  • K.B. Chandran -- first full-time faculty member hired in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, mentor to undergraduate students, graduate students, and peers -- who is retiring after 36 years.
  • Biomedical engineering alumni using their education in many fields.
  • Manny Villafana, recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Science degree, in recognition of his contributions to biomedical device development, biomedical engineering, civil leadership, and student success.

It also has traditional favorite features, such as College News, Class Notes, and In Memoriam.

Iowa Engineer magazine continues to be the best way for Engineering alumni and friends to find out what fellow graduates are doing, learn more how students are learning to become an “engineer…and something more,” and discover how faculty and staff members create breakthroughs in research and teaching excellence.
