Iowa to Receive State Leadership Award for Wind Energy

Thursday, May 29, 2008

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has chosen the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) to receive its 2008 State Leadership Award.

Gov. Chet Culver is accepting the award on behalf of IDED during the Windpower 2008 Conference & Exhibition currently being held in Houston, Texas.

"Governor Culver and his team in Iowa have been extraordinarily effective in drawing wind power companies to their state - in the heart of America's 'wind belt,'" said AWEA Executive Director Randall Swisher, in a statement. "They have helped launch a new wave of clean-energy-based economic activity in the Midwest, attracting at least five major manufacturers to Iowa through innovative policy and aggressive, pro-business strategies. We're glad to recognize their leadership with this award."

Iowa is No. 1 in the nation in wind generation as percentage of total generation, with 5.5 percent of its electricity generated by wind power facilities.

The College of Engineering is playing a leadership role in the formation of the Iowa Alliance for Wind Innovation and Novel Development (IAWIND).

IAWIND is a virtual partnership among the Regents universities, community colleges, industry, and the Iowa Department of Economic Development, designed to support the State of Iowa in its efforts to continue to attract and nurture wind energy and related industries; and become the nation’s leading state in alternate energy technologies. It is designed to serve as a catalyst for the growth of wind energy, and to support and to facilitate the research and training needs of wind energy companies.

Gov. Culver unveiled the web site-based alliance April 30. The web address for the new alliance is www.iawind.org. The IAWIND web site conveys the alliance members and activities, and includes a catalogue of existing wind-related activities and capabilities within Iowa. The site is already helping the State and its constituents in providing a unified storefront of capabilities and contacts, and this is being used by IDED to help attract additional wind-related companies to Iowa.
