Just Will Give Last Lecture for UI Seniors April 25
University of Iowa News Release
UI Professor Craig Just will present "Life as a Hawkeye Alum Will Be Just Like Guitar Hero," a University of Iowa Last Lecture, a new event, at 5 p.m. Friday, April 25, at the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) River Terrace.
The Last Lecture is sponsored by the UI Alumni Association, RiverFest and the IMU. The event, which will last from 5 to 7 p.m., includes music, prizes, and a free dinner for UI seniors.
Just, a UI professor in civil and environmental engineering, will give the Last Lecture, a talk that gives graduating seniors words of wisdom and humor to inspire them in their future as new alumni. Just was selected to give the lecture by students, faculty and staff who voted in an online poll posted on the UI Alumni Association Web site.
During the lecture, students from the audience will be selected to perform a "first day on the job enactment," Just said. "A university degree will get you a good job, but awareness of personal strengths and an understanding of human nature will get you a meaningful career," Just added. "Students will have to come to the presentation to find out how this all relates to Guitar Hero (a popular video game)!"
Just is highly regarded by students for going above and beyond in his academic responsibilities, Shannon Thomas, the event organizer and assistant director of alumni programs, said. He advises Engineers for a Sustainable World, shares his knowledge of all things "green," and created a program to engage students through real-life experiences that improve water quality in Mexico and Haiti.
The Last Lecture is open to the public, but the free dinner is only available for graduating seniors. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Hawkeye (formerly the Wheelroom) in the IMU. For more information, visit http://www.iowalum.com/graduation.
