Tim Mattes, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering and associate faculty research engineer at IIHR--Hydroscience & Engineering, is part of a

University of Iowa research effort that has found Chilean clues to Earth's climate change history.

The university research team is studying sediment samples from an Andean lake that can fill in data about the Younger Dryas, a 1,300-year-long cold snap and drought that happened approximately 12,800 years ago.

The research team is analyzing those samples with Mattes, who is able to pull DNA out of the sediment to figure out how organisms living in the lake changed throughout the Younger Dryas.
