The UI's Operator Performance Laboratory (OPL), a unit of the Center for Computer-Aided Design, was featured September 17 as a news segment on NBC's Today Show.

The investigative report, drawn from an earlier two-part investigative report by NBC San Francisco Bay News, questioned whether airline pilots are relying too much on automation in the cockpit.  OPL was showcased, based on studies Tom Schnell, associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering and director of the lab, and his team have conducted on the issue.
