Tom Schnell, associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering and director of the Operator Perfrmance Laboratory at the Center for Computer-Aided Design, has received a $10,000 research grant from Rockwell Collins, Inc., Cedar Rapids, IA.

Schnell and his research team will develop a concept of instrumenting a manned flight test platform with equipment so it will operate as an unmanned aircraft system.  They will study integration and technology challenges associated with unmanned aircraft in the National Airspace System.  The goal is to enable the unmanned aircraft system to operate without special provisions such as special use airspace or dedicated air traffic control requirements, especially during take-off and landing.
