University of Iowa News Release

Alec Scranton, professor of chemical and biochemical engineering and associate dean for academic programs in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, has been appointed UI Foundation Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, effective Jan. 1.

UI College of Engineering Dean Barry Butler said that the honor recognizes Scranton's outstanding teaching and research accomplishments.

Scranton, who earned a bachelor's degree from the UI in 1984 and a doctorate from Purdue University in 1990, joined the college faculty in 2000 and has expertise in polymer science and engineering and related fields. He is director of the National Science Foundation-based Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Fundamentals and Applications of Photopolymerization, a center jointly administered by the UI and the University of Colorado. Photopolymerization -- light-activated processes -- are used in areas such as solvent-free processing, biomedical materials and high-technology devices.

He has published more than 100 research articles, holds nine U.S. patents with two more pending, and has given more than 70 invited presentations and 100 contributed presentations at scientific meetings. In March 2007 he received the Cooperative Research Award from the American Chemical Society's Division of Polymeric Materials.

Scranton won the 2007 Regents Award for Faculty Excellence honoring faculty members for work representing a significant contribution to excellence in public education. As associate dean for academic programs in the college, he has led a major reshaping of engineering curricula and overseen increases in student enrollment, the Honors Program and undergraduate degree recipients.
