Chemical and Biochemical Engineering
Bigger Issues/Global Business Project
Each team selected a company with an US-based chemical or biochemical manufacturing facility that has launched a global business endeavor by building (or acquiring) an internationally based chemical or biochemical manufacturing facility. The teams prepared a report that considers the “bigger issues” (health and safety, environment, plant site requirements, patent issues, etc.) of such an endeavor and presented their results to the entire class.

- Huntsman Corporation (Conroe, TX vs. Taboao da Serra, Brazil) -- M. Christensen, D. Ellickson, Z. Hachmeister, D. Isler, A. Poss
- Cargill (Conover, IA vs. Paradeep, India) -- B. Bapat, T. Gunn, K. Haman, P. Osterberg
- Chevron (US vs. Nigeria) -- M. Cross, C. Grieme, C. Kozlowski, B. Schnicker

Design of LNG System for 200 MM SCFD Natural Gas
Each team considered the following design problem: 200 MM SCFD of sweetened Algerian natural gas needs to be liquefied. The plant will be located at a seaport in Algeria, which has facilities for storing and loading LNG into specially designed tankers. Several schemes for liquefaction should be considered before selecting the final scheme for detailed design. Each team prepared a preliminary design, estimated the total investment, and estimated the manufacturing cost for a process to liquefy 200 MM SCFD of sweetened Algerian gas. The same five teams as listed above submitted final designs.
