Milan Sonka, professor of electrical and computer engineering and co-director of the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging, has been appointed to a five-year term as departmental executive officer of Electrical and Computer Engineering, effective July 16, 2008.

Sonka brings a wealth of talent and experience to the position, including developing and launching the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging initiated late last year, and his expertise in co-founding VIDA Diagnostics, Inc. now at The University of Iowa Research Park.

Engineering dean P. Barry Butler noted that Sonka’s experience will play a major role in advancing the department's academic and research activities.

Sonka succeeds Jon Kuhl as departmental executive officer. Kuhl has led the department since 2000. He will remain on the Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty and will continue to advance his research as a member of the UI Public Policy Center.

“I deeply appreciate the wisdom and counsel Professor Kuhl has provided as departmental executive office, Butler said. “I encourage all College of Engineering faculty and staff to thank Professor Kuhl for his service to the College and in congratulating Professor Sonka as he begins his new leadership position.”
