Sonka to Receive 2011 Regents Award for Faculty Excellence
Milan Sonka, professor and departmental executive officer of electrical and computer engineering, has been named a recipient of the 2011 Iowa Board of Regents Award for Faculty Excellence.
Sonka also is professor of radiation oncology, ophthalmology & visual sciences, and applied mathematical & computational sciences. In addition, he serves as director of the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging.
Given by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, the award honors faculty members for work representing a significant contribution to excellence in public education.
Sonka is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. His principal field of research is medical image analysis, in which he has conducted NIH-funded research to develop image analysis tools aimed at better detection of heart cardiovascular, pulmonary, retinal, and osteoarthritic diseases and is engaged in NIH-funded imaging research into coronary hemodynamics and atherosclerosis. Sonka came to the UI in 1990.
Sonka is editor-in-chief of Transactions on Medical Imaging (TMI), a journal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He also is co-founder of VIDA Diagnostics, a Coralville, IA, based company specializing in quantitative pulmonary image analysis for the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary diseases.
