University of Iowa News Release

The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Program at the University of Iowa College of Engineering will hold an FTC Coaches' Workshop from Sunday, June 13, through Tuesday, June 15.

The workshop, to be held at Seamans Center on the UI Campus in Iowa City, will offer a variety of topics -- ranging from keeping an engineering notebook to how to build a robot -- for new coaches who plan to participate in the 2010-2011 FTC program.

In January, the UI, in cooperation with official national sponsor Rockwell Collins, hosted an FTC Program for the first time. The 24 teams, each composed of five to 10 high school students, constructed robots that later took part in a competition. The winners advanced to a regional and, eventually, a national competition.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 by Segway inventor Dean Kamen to encourage student team building skills, entrepreneurship and "gracious professionalism."
