UI Wins Iowa Recycling Award for Best Practices
Monday, October 6, 2008
The University of Iowa has been awarded a 2008 Iowa Recycling Association Annual Award for Best Practices for recycling efforts and programs on campus. The award will be presented at the annual Iowa Recycling Association and Iowa Society of Solid Waste Operations Awards Presentation, Tuesday, Oct. 7, in Ottumwa.
The UI had a 19.8 percent increase in weight of recyclables collected and diverted more than 25 percent of its waste stream from the landfill to recycling facilities, an increase over 2006, when the UI recycled 22 percent. The UI currently recycles more than 2,085 tons worth of materials. A number of student organizations have helped increase recycling efforts and awareness of recycling programs.
The UI was nominated by City Carton of Iowa City, with support from the Iowa Waste Exchange, Department of Natural Resources and the City of Iowa City. Recently, the UI received grants from both the National Recycling Coalition and the Department of Natural Resources to purchase additional recycling collection bins for campus grounds to increase recycling efforts both inside and outside campus buildings.
