Graduate Incentive Fellowship Program
A Partnership Between
The College of Engineering and
The Graduate College
The College of Engineering is increasing its efforts to obtain graduate fellowships for our students.
- This programs pertains to attracting to the CoE fellowship awardees and to working with our currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students to compete for (and win) competitive fellowships.
Applying for competitive awards provides students with a valuable experience; and success yields tangible rewards for the student and the College. Thus, we have established " The Graduate Fellowship and Awards Incentive Program -- A Partnership between The College of Engineering and The Graduate College". The program consists of incentives and activities targeted towards increasing the number and competitiveness of our applications.
This program is put in place to expand and complement, and not replace, existing programs (such as those in The Graduate College and IIHR).
- There are many national graduate fellowship award programs (e.g., the NSF Graduate Fellowship Program) that provide to the student an attractive stipend, tuition and other perks. These awards are typically for 3 years and can be supplemented for an additional 2 years. We need to increase our efforts to get our students to apply, and to have awardees enroll at Iowa. We need to personally encourage our top senior students to apply and our junior (and perhaps sophomore) year students to begin thinking about competing. Getting involved in service activities, etc. can be an important element of success. We need to promote this to our graduate students as well. First and second year students are usually eligible. Finally, we need to increase our efforts to mentor the application process.
- The main elements of The Graduate Fellowship and Awards Incentive Program are presented below:
1) To increase the number of applications, we have instituted an incentives program, where a bonus of $100 will be awarded to the student for a completed and submitted fellowship application. The student's advisor or departmental graduate coordinator will oversee the process to insure that the student is eligible and that a sincere effort has been made. These funds will be placed into the student's U-bill, and a maximum of $100/student will be awarded per year regardless of the number of fellowship applications submitted. We plan to hold mini-workshops during the Fall semester to provide information about the various opportunities and the application process. The workship for the Fall 2006 term is Sept. 27, 2006.
2) To supplement fellowship winners and to encourage fellowship winners to enroll in graduate studies at Iowa, we will provide to awardees (who enroll at Iowa):
a) A new laptop for the national awards, a value up to $2,500;
b) From the College of Engineering, an enhancement fund account to enhance the student's graduate education experience (i.e. funds to attend conferences). These enhancement funds will equal 10% of the fellowship awarded. Requests to use these funds need to be submitted to Rebecca Whitaker.
Note: In order to receive the award supplement, the students must notify Dean Carmichael when they win the nationally competitive fellowship.
- These incentives complement the Graduate Incentives Program administered by the Graduate College. A list of eligible national fellowship programs is available at (http://www.grad.uiowa.edu/Students/FinancialSupport/Fellowships/Index.asp) This is not an exhaustive list, and additional Fellowship programs will be considered. Please contact the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies (gregory-carmichael@uiowa.edu) with questions regarding eligibility questions. Additional information on the various National Fellowship Programs and application process may be obtained by contacting Graduate College Assistant Dean Sandra Barkan at 319-335-2136 or via e-mail: sandra-barkan@uiowa.edu.
- To qualify to receive a Graduate Incentive Fellowship bonus for application and supplement for awardees, students should send the following information to the College of Engineering at the time they apply for a nationally competitive fellowship accompanied by a copy of the fellowship application. This information should be sent to Gregory R. Carmichael, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, 3100 SC, 335-5191, gcarmich@engineering.uiowa.edu.
