State of the Art Facilities
Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences
The College of Engineering, located at the Seamans Center, recently completed a four-year $31 million building modernization project. The new facility is designed for students and faculty to learn, teach, and collaborate in a "living learning laboratory," combining state-of-the art technology with renowned, attractive small-college personality.
National Advanced Driving Simulator
The National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS) is the most sophiscated research driving simulator in the world. Developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the NADS offers high-fidelity, and real time driving simulation. It consists of a large dome in which entire cars and the cabs of trucks and buses can be mounted. The vehicle cabs are equipped electronically and mechanically using instrumentation specific to their make and model. At the same time, the motion system, on which the dome is mounted, provides 400 square meters of horizontal and longitudinal travel and nearly 360 degrees of rotation in either direction. As a result, the driver is able to feel acceleration, braking and steering cues as if he or she were actually driving a real car, bus or truck.
The Engineering Research Facility
The Engineering Research Facility houses the Center for Computer-Aided Design, a multidisciplinary research center in the College of Engineering with emphasis in Design and Optimization, Human-System Inte raction, Kinematics, Dynamics, and Solid Mechanics.
Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories
The Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories (IATL) furthers The University of Iowa's tradition of encouraging inter-disciplinary research. Faculty conducting research in the IATL include groups from the departments of Chemistry and Physics, from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, as well as departments of Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, from the College of Engineering. The IATL also houses the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, the Optical Science and Technology Center, and a portion of the Center for Computer-Aided Design.
The Lucille A. Carver Mississippi Riverside Environmental Research Station (LACMRERS)
The Lucille A Carver Mississippi Riverside Environmental Research Station (LACMRERS) will provide opportunities for researchers and educators from the University of Iowa and around the world to study river ecosystems in a multidisciplinary setting. LACMRERS will provide state-of-the-art facilities to study diverse facets of the UMR to understand river ecosystems and their response to natural events and human activities. It will also provide a hands-on experience to students of all levels in river processes and offer opportunities for public education.
IIHR - Hydroscience & Engineering
IIHR, a unit of The University of Iowa's College of Engineering, is one of the nation's premier and oldest fluids research and engineering laboratories. Situated on the Iowa River in Iowa City, Iowa, IIHR seeks to educate students and to conduct research in the broad fields of hydraulics and fluid mechanics. IIHR's training in the theoretical and computational aspects of fluid flow, intermixed with hands-on engineering practices, attracts students with a rich variety of interests from around the world.
