Undergraduate Engineering Scholarships for Fall Semester

Carefully read the following before applying.

Undergraduate students who are enrolled in the College of Engineering are invited to submit a General Scholarship Application that will enable the College of Engineering to consider you for the scholarships listed below. These engineering scholarships are restricted to students who are enrolled full-time (12+ semester hours) in the College of Engineering for Fall 2009 Semester and have completed at least one year of engineering studies. Competition will be fierce because the limited funds are available.

A required on-line application will be made available in the beginning of April and must be submitted before April 30. You will be notified of your award by mid-summer. All engineering scholarship recipients' transcripts are monitored throughout the year for maintenance of minimum scholarship criteria.

In order to apply you are required to:

  • be enrolled in the College of Engineering as a full-time student and in good academic standing
  • carefully read the descriptions (below) of the scholarships offered through this application process
  • as an award recipient, be willing to submit a thank you letter for review; agree to make revisions, if requested; and send it to the scholarship donor before scholarship funding will be released
  • submit an on-line application and resume following descriptions (below) of scholarships offered
  • submit the following materials to Nancy Schneider, 3124 SC, by April 30th, 5:00 p.m.:

Failure to provide requested information may make you ineligible for some scholarships.

Engineering scholarships have been generously funded by the following corporate and individual donors:

Accenture

Awarded to a senior, graduating in May 2010. Must be interested in careers in consulting, and opportunity to apply engineering knowledge and principles in solving business and technology-related problems. Student must possess leadership qualities and the ability to juggle multiple activities. Applicant must display strong academic performance, a 3.2 GPA or better and be a US citizen.

Alcoa Scholarships for Diverse Engineering Students

First –year women and underrepresented minorities; upper-class women and underrepresented minorities pursuing electrical, industrial or mechanical engineering.

Caterpillar

Women and underrepresented minorities pursuing chemical, electrical, industrial or mechanical engineering with a UI cumulative GPA of 2.8 or better, must be a US citizen or permanent resident, financial need.

Cerner

Awarded to an electrical and computer engineering major,junior/senior standing during the year of actually receiving the scholarship, not at time awarded.  Cerner prefers supporting a student with junior standing, Minimum GPA of 3.0., Relevant work or internship experience in the field of computer technology (preferred, but not required), Relevant work or internship experience in the healthcare industry (preferred, but not required).

Deere & Co.

Awarded to women and underrepresented minorities pursuing electrical, industrial or mechanical engineering, academic achievement.

Emerson Engineering Scholarships, Fisher Division

Award(s) will be given to University of Iowa engineering students pursuing chemical, electrical, industrial or mechanical engineering with a UI cumulative GPA of 2.8 or better. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Howard R. Green Company

Awarded to a student in junior or senior status pursuing a Bachelors Degree in civil or environmental engineering with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship. Preference will be given to students who have participated in engineering student organizations and are seeking employment in Iowa post graduation.

Pella Corporation

Awarded to a junior classification by the end of spring semester, Must display leadership skills such as positions held in the classroom or outside activities including student and community organizations, volunteerism, paid jobs during school, etc., Must display strong academic performance, a 3.0 GPA or better, Must be pursuing a chemical, industrial or mechanical engineering degree. Female/Minority students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Rockwell Collins Education Fund

Awarded to students who have completed 32 sh toward electrical & computer, industrial or mechanical degree by the end spring 08 semester. Applicant must possess strong leadership skills such as positions held in the classroom or outside activities and be able to juggle multiple activities at once. Must display strong academic performance, a 3.0 GPA or better. Preference will be given to women & minorities, Preference will be given to applicants who are available to consider an internship or co-op opportunity with Rockwell Collins.

Stanley Consultants Charitable Foundation

Awarded to a student with junior status who has a strong inclination toward a career in the field of consulting engineering; and majoring in chemical, mechanical, electrical, civil or environmental engineering. Must display leadership skills such as positions held in the classroom or outside activities including student and community organizations, volunteerism, paid jobs during school, etc. Must display strong academic performance, a 3.0 GPA or better in their engineering major.  In the case of equally qualified candidates, financial need and female/minority status will be given consideration.

Archie A. Alexander Memorial

Awarded to outstanding students who have completed his or her sophomore year.

William C. Blackburn Engineering Scholarship

Must be a full-time upper-level student in good standing, should be a U.S. citizen of any ethnic background. He or she should be of good character, be an asset to the University, have a reasonable GPA, and show promise of being a solid addition to the engineering world.

Richard and Alice Bogue Engineering Scholarship

Support for students in Ida Grove, Iowa, who demonstrate financial need, with preference given to students from Ida Grove/Battle Creek High School.

David R. Buchanan Scholarship

Awarded to five students from biomedical, chemical and biochemical, electrical and computer, or mechanical. The recipients shall be native born, U.S. citizens and will be selected based primarily on academic excellence, with financial need a secondary consideration.

Archie N Carter Civil Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to civil engineers, financial need, US citizens, Iowa resident, entering first year through seniors considered.

Thomas and Sophronia Caywood Scholarship

Support for an undergraduate student with financial need.

Victor and Elizabeth Chang Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to an undergraduate student pursuing a career in hydraulics engineering, financial need based.

Walter R. Chapman and Helen M. Chapman UI Engineering Scholarship

Graduate of Fort Dodge High School, Fort Dodge, IA or Nodaway Valley High School, Greenfield, IA graduates from Webster and Adair counties in State of Iowa are eligible;  preference to student who has played a musical instrument in high school band or orchestra, demonstrate financial need.

Joanne and Robert M. Chiusano Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to an electrical/computer engineering female with financial need. Preference given to ethnically-diverse background US citizen, also based upon academic performance.

Melville F. Clements Scholarship

Scholarship awarded on the basis of scholastic ability, promise of professional success in engineering, qualities of leadership, and, financial need.

James Deluhery Engineering Scholarship

One scholarship to a sophomore-level student; one scholarship to a junior-level student; and one scholarship to a senior-level student. Need-based, U.S. citizens, must have graduated from an Iowa high school, GPA of 2.5 minimum.

Tom Dimond Fund for Excellence in Engineering

Awarded to talented and deserving students.

Fethke Industrial Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to an industrial engineering major, junior standing. Applicant must demonstrate financial need, good academic standing, preference shall be given to a student from Woodbury County.

George C. Flick Engineering Scholarship

Awarded upon need and merit, to deserving students.

Clifford and JoRuth Fudge Scholarship

Deserving students who graduated from high school in Iowa and is an Iowa resident; who has financial need (bottom 1/3 of group with most need); who has good character; is hard working; and may have been employed during high school. First preference is given to students involved in scouts or similar character building organization.

Gannon Samek Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to an electrical, Iowa resident, Iowa cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.

Robert F. and Mary J. Godwin Scholarship

Awarded to a resident of the State of Iowa, minimum ACT cumulative score of 28, 3.0 GPA or better.

Frederic G. Higbee Memorial

Supports undergraduate scholarships.

Cathy S. Hinton Scholarship

Awarded to a female engineering student who is an Iowa resident, with first preference given to graduates of North Linn High School.

Hubbard Family Scholarship

Awarded to a first-year student, based on need and merit whose parents and grandparents did not have the opportunity to attend college. A first-generation college student.

Hal W. Hunt Scholarship

Awarded to civil engineers showing promise to field of civil & environmental engineering, US citizen, good academic standing.

Dwight and Elsie Johnston Engineering Scholarship

First preference to students from O’Brien and/or Hancock Counties. Iowa residents. Based on need and merit, to deserving students.

Forrest and Adah Kehn Scholarship

To support undergraduate scholarships.

Lloyd Knowler Quality Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to an industrial major, based on merit. Must be a junior or senior.
Kook-Wha and Kwang-Kuk Koh Engineering Scholarship
Awarded to deserving undergraduate, chemical engineering.

Leo W. Ladehoff Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to an industrial major, based on merit and financial need.

B.J. Lambert Scholarship

Awarded to a civil engineering undergraduate student.

Ray and Sara Latimer Engineering Scholarship

Based on need and merit to deserving students.

Kwo-Tseng Lee Scholarship

Awarded to first-year engineering students.

William Lichtenberger Scholarship

Half of the funding directed to chemical engineering students and the other half directed to engineering students majoring in any other engineering department. The recipients must demonstrate financial need and be in good academic standing.

William Liike Scholarship

Awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior, all engineering disciplines, based on financial need.

Mr. and Mrs. Fritz W. Louis Civil Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to a civil undergraduate student.

Vincent A. Mascagni Scholarship

Awarded to two students with a G.P.A. of 3.0 and who are in their sophomore, junior or senior year. First preference is given to graduates of Clinton County high schools. Next preference is given to graduates of eastern Iowa high schools.
Phillip O. Mayberry Engineering Scholarship
Awarded to deserving undergraduate, resident of Iowa.

C. P. McGrath Memorial Scholarship

Awarded on the basis of financial need, reasonable academic progress toward graduation, to  sophomore, junior or senior students with first preference given to students from Iowa.

Mechanical Engineering Emeritus Faculty Scholarship

Successful completion of first or second year of studies in mechanical, financial need.

Edward Mielnik Endowed Scholarship

(Letter of recommendation required)

Awarded to a student who has achieved junior standing, is pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering, financial need, demonstrate integrity of character, dedication to excellence both in personal and professional activities, hardworking, and devoted to the field of engineering.

Richard K. Miller Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to a student who has begun their studies in the Technological Entrepreneurship Certificate Program, have an Iowa cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, actively pursuing coursework toward a B.S. in Engineering.

Kenneth Mosher Scholarship

Support for undergraduate scholarships.

Robert E. Moulds Global Engineering Scholarship

Undergraduate interested in international environment and study abroad, award based on financial need.

Dr. H. L. Olin Scholarship

Awarded to chemical engineering students with financial need.

Bea Park Memorial Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to either undergraduate or graduate students who are studying Biomaterials.

Wayne L Paulson Environmental Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to a Civil & Environmental Engineering student with an interest in environmental studies and in pursuing a career in the Environmental Engineering profession. Additional selection considerations include quality of academic performance, participation in extracurricular activities and interests in community service and public programs to enhance environmental quality.

M.W. Petersen Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a mechanical, female, based on academic performance and financial need.

Petersen/Miller Scholarship

Awarded to a civil/environmental student. A deserving female based on merit and financial need.

George L. & Gladys I. Petrik Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to deserving Iowa resident undergraduate students.

R. Milton Pierce Memorial Scholarship

Recipients are named after their sophomore year. Selection is based on financial need and academic promise. One annual scholarship is to be awarded to a female engineering student.

The Don and Kay Pilgrim Engineering Scholarship

Scholarship will provide for students in the College of Engineering who demonstrate financial need.

Herm and Dianne Reininga Scholarship

To support undergraduate scholarships.

Beverly Robalino Scholarship

Awarded to a female, preference to applicants from Iowa.

Paul Scholz Memorial Scholarship

(Essay required describing your interest in graduate studies and two letters of support verifying information in essay)

Awarded to an undergraduate engineering student who best exemplifies academic and personal qualities that Dean Scholz represented such as integrity, leadership, and dedication to excellence. The scholarship is established to provide recognition and support for a student who plans to pursue a graduate degree program in engineering and possibly become a professor of engineering.

Sedlacek Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to an Iowa resident.

A. Donald Sexton Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to a mechanical, Iowa resident, sophomore, junior or senior, preference to student who has either completed an internship or worked for an Iowa-based company to enhance their engineering education.

Clifford and Nina Smith Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to a civil/environmental student based upon financial need and merit.

Fred Stebler Scholarship

Support for undergraduate scholarships.

Professor Ralph and Barbara Stephens Mechanical Engineering Scholarship

Awarded to students majoring in mechanical, graduated from an Iowa high school and resident of Iowa.

Robert K. Vierck Scholarship

(Essay required describing your interest in graduate studies and a letter of support verifying information in essay)

Awarded to a mechanical, junior or senior who plans to take graduate work in mechanical engineering and study solid mechanics, US citizen, and financial need.

L.A.Ware Scholarship

Awarded to an electrical engineering undergraduate, merit based.

Deserving engineering undergraduates.

Woodburn Scholarship

Awarded to a student in good academic standing with financial need.

The on-line application requires you to:

  1. Log-in with your Engineering ID.
  2. Give short answers to the following three questions:
    1. List all volunteer, jobs, organizations and leadership experience. Also, give a specific example demonstrating your ability to balance several of these activities at once.
    2. What are your career aspirations including your interest and objectives in engineering? (If interested in the Pella scholarship, please relate this to manufacturing engineering.)
    3. Describe any relevant life experience related to engineering (if interested in the Stanley consultants scholarship please relate this to experience with consulting, if applying for Cerner, please relate this experience to healthcare information technology).
  3. Submit an up-to-date resume.
