Professor Abdel-Malek is Director of the Center for Computer Aided Design, a
25-year old center with a history of excellence of research in modeling and simulation.
He is an international expert in Human Simulation.
Dr. Abdel-Malek is the creator of SANTOS, Founder and Director of the Virtual Soldier Research program at the Center for Computer Aided Design, where he manages a multi-million dollar program funded by the US Army towards developing novel technologies for simulating humans in the digital world to help accomplish the Army's Transformation vision. The VSR team has received national and international recognition for advancing research in the area of human modeling and simulation, and in particular, in creating the SantosTM environment, which is a comprehensive environment for simulating biomechanics, dynamics, and many other aspects of human studies. SantosTM is used in the study of safety issues, motion, biomechanics, clothing effects, energy requirements, disability research, forensic simulation, and much more. The VSR program has attracted more than $10M in research funding and in less than 3 years since its inception. He received his MS and PhD degrees in Robotics from the University of Pennsylvania and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Jordan. He has authored or co-authored over 120 technical papers in the field and 2 US Patens. He is the recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship, the IASTE Scholarship, the 2000 John T. Parsons Outstanding Manufacturing Engineer award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), 2001 Arch T. Colwell best paper award from the Society of Automotive Engineers for his pioneering work on "Understanding the workspace of the upper extremities", was nominated to the Academy of Sciences Frontiers of Engineers, the 2004 Outstanding paper award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and he serves on several national and international committees of conferences and review panels. Dr. Abdel-Malek is the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Robotics and Automation and the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Human Modeling and Simulation.
