Problem #6
Daily Flow Statistics for a River

Examine the daily flow statistics for the Iowa River at Iowa City (USGS 05454500) and compare its variations throughout the year with those for the Cedar River at Cedar Rapids (the class handout).

The daily flow statistics can be downloaded directly from the USGS web site; you don't have to compute a thing.  Go to USGS Surface-Water Data for the Nation page and select the Statistics - Daily, use the site number above, and then go to the bottom of the page and select the item from Retrieve USGS Surface-Water Daily Statistics ... You will to get the discharge data for the period of record.

Plot the mean flow, the maximum and minimum flows, and the 5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 95% flow quantiles, versus calendar date (just like in the Cedar River plot).

Compare the variations in river flow regime for the Iowa River with those for the Cedar River.  Besides the difference in the flow magnitudes, what other difference do you since in their flow regimes?
