Reservoir Sediment Inflow in 2008


Again, let's ballpark (estimate) some number for sediment inflow (in tons) to the Coralville reservoir for the 2008.

First, download the daily average discharge data for the Iowa River at Marengo for 1-March through 31-August 2008.  Assume that the suspended load (in tons/day) versus daily average discharge (in cfs) is as given in class, where k = 0.001 and m = 2.0. 

  1. Estimate the suspended load (in tons) for each day from March through August.
  2. Estimate the total suspended load (in tons) for the entire period.
  3. Estimate the total bed load (in tons) for the entire period.
  4. Estimate the total sediment load (in tons) for the entire period.
  5. Some have reported that the erosion rates from agricultural lands exceeded 50 tons per acre during the high periods of runoff.  Does this estimate seem consistent, or inconsistent, with the "ballpark" estimate of sediment load?
