Sediment Basin Design

Use the SUDAS design criteria to size a sediment basin to capture medium silt (~0.0001 ft diameter) from a 13.2 acre construction site.

The design outflow is the 2-year peak discharge estimated by the Rational Method, where the runoff coefficient is 0.75, and the 2-year rainfall rate is 1.44 in/hr (for the 1-hour time of concentration).

  1. Estimate the discharge outflow (in cfs).
  2. Select a basin surface area (in ft2 and acres).
  3. Select a basin depth (in ft) and volume in (ft3 and acre-feet).
  4. Assuming that the basin will have a trapezoidal shape, select a cross-section and length (in ft) based on the above that meets design criteria.
