Opportunities - OPEN POSTDOC POSITION SEE BELOW Graduate Education Applicants interested in these research topics please contact professor Stanier by email. The University of Iowa strongly supports minority recruitment into advanced degree programs in the College of Engineering. Financial assistance and mentoring are the foundation of the college's successful efforts to increase enrollment of underrepresented minorities (African American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino). For starters, look at the EI2 program.
Undergraduate Employment and Research Hiring undergraduate researchers for the IMCANS (Iowa Multiscale Carbon and Nitrogen Studies) project. Those interested in the research need to apply for the NASA Iowa Space Grant Consortium Scholarship and Fellowship. This is a one year award that carries with it $7,000. Link here.
Post-Doctoral Positions Accepting applications for a 2 to 3 year postdoctoral scholar for a research project on Chemical Transport Modeling with a focus on source-oriented modeling using CMAQ and data assimilation of speciated particulate matter (PM) measurements. Project sponsor is EPA STAR program. Modeling scale is urban to regional scale, and model predictions will be used in ongoing health effects studies aimed at the particle component toxicity problem. Work will be conducted in the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research (CGRER) and the IIHR Hydroscience and Engineering Institutes at the University of Iowa. Project is interdisciplinary and research team includes epidemiologists, biostatisticians, geographers, PM measurement experts, and atmospheric modelers. Fellow will work closely with Professor Charles Stanier (who is the PI on this project) and Professor Gregory Carmichael who will lead the modeling and assimilation elements of the project. Inverse (top down flux inverse) modeling of PM sources and data assimilation of satellite and surface data using a CMAQ adjoint will also be a critical focus of the project. Exposure to other modeling efforts underway at CGRER is an added benefit of the position. These include projects focused on greenhouse gas fluxes, forecasting in support of aircraft field campaigns, aerosol nucleation, and heterogeneous reactions on aerosols. Position entails model development, extensive model runs using CMAQ, and assisting graduate and undergraduate researchers. Experience in air quality modeling, Models-3, CMAQ, PM source apportionment, and source inventory preparation for air quality models is highly desirable. Expertise and interest in inverse modeling using optimal interpolation, 4dvar, and Kalman filter techniques is highly desirable . Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment is required. The University of Iowa is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Interested applicants should submit a CV and cover letter to charles-stanier@uiowa.edu.
