Research Interests

Cognitive modeling of human interaction with in-vehicle technology, interface design and driver support, automation reliance and supervisory control, design and testing of in-vehicle technologies, application of ecological frameworks to interface design.

Cognitive Work Analysis Applied to Littoral Combat Domain (Aptima):

The goal of this project was to develop innovative mission plan understanding/assessment tools that will enable a mission manager of multiple heterogeneous unmanned vehicles to rapidly judge the value of plans developed by autonomous systems, choose between plan options, and understand how best to modify plans to achieve high-level tactical goals.

Developing Guidelines for the Display of In-Vehicle Text Messages (GM):

The goal of this project was to integrate previous research findings with empirical investigations to develop guidelines for the display of text messages on in-vehicle displays. The approach required extensive review of published literature to identify well-justified specification for text display. Gaps in the literature were addressed through a series of simulator experiments. The first experiment examined the effect of varying number of lines, the type of scrolling, and the control of scrolling. The second experiment examined dynamic display of text messages using variations of the speed at which the message was scrolled across the display and how much of the message was scrolled. The third experiment complemented the first experiment, examining how performance using a bezel-mounted or steering wheel-mounted message control button differed from that of the touch-screen.
