We are studying the cardiorespiratory responses to brief changes in inhaled gas, such as changes in oxygen or carbon dioxide, or concentrations of new anesthetic agents such as desflurane and sevoflurane. From these responses, mathematical models are derived that aid in "teasing apart" the underlying functional and anatomic structure. Aspects of linear and nonlinear dynamics are used.
Soman Puzhankara (a Ph.D. candidate) is modeling the systems' responses to brief and sustained changes in isoflurane and sevoflurane. From these models, he is comparing and contrasting the dynamic responses, and proposing mechanisms of action.
