Problem #30
SCS Design Storm for Iowa City

Construct the 100-year SCS 24-hour design storm (Type II distribution) for applications in Iowa City.  Estimate rainfall depths using the rainfall frequency atlas estimates for Iowa (class handout, Table 3.5 -- Section 6).

  1. Determine the 100-year 24-hour rainfall depth (inches).
  2. Compute the 100-yr 24-hr SCS Type II design storm (1 hour increments).

Hint: Use the handout showing the ordinates for the SCS Type II precipitation distribution to compute the cumulative precipitation (mass curve) for the design storm. Next, determine the incremental accumulation for each 1 hour interval.
