Educational Opportunities at the ISRC

The Center is able to fulfill its educational mission of training the clinicians, students and other personnel in allied health fields through various departments on the campus, including Orthopaedics and Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Leon Grobler is involved with the training and education of medical students, residents and fellows, patient welfare, and the clinical aspects of patient treatment. As Co-Director of the Spine Diagnostic and Treatment Center within the Department of Orthopaedics, he is actively involved in the rehabilitation of patients with spinal disorders. Professors Goel and Wilder teach biomedical engineering courses (e.g., spinal biomechanics, orthopaedic biomechanics, and ergonomics in the work place) to undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering students in the College of Engineering. Independently, and in collaboration with other researchers, they supervise undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering students. For example, at present they jointly supervise about 20 students. These students help with the research projects, and in turn earn their master/doctoral degrees. Undergraduate students also get valuable experiences while working on basic and industry sponsored projects within the Center. A number of medical students, residents and fellows also work on the projects. Professor Wilder provides a monthly lecture on the ergonomic principles in the work place as a part of the Spine Diagnostic & Treatment Center team. He undertakes collaborative research-cum-teaching in the area of ergonomics with the staff of the Injury Prevention Research Center of the College of Preventive Medicine. The Center staff is also engaged in delivering seminars to high school students, and other constituencies, both on and off campus. Through the University-wide Secondary Student Training Program (SSTP), the Center staff hosts several students for a six to eight-week research internship within the Center each summer.
