Peeples Research Group

The Peeples research group engages in biochemical engineering research. Our work involves using microorganisms and enzymes to carry out chemical conversions of industrial and environmental significance.  We work with a variety of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea and fungi. Activities range from classical microbial physiology to molecular biology and nanotechnology.

Research interests focus on environmentally beneficial biocatalysis and bioprocesses under extreme environments. Specific interests include conversion of biological feedstocks to fuels and chemicals, synthesis of specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals with green chemical processing, and enhancing efficiencies of environmental toxin biodegradation. Enabling technologies are being developed through fundamental studies of interfacial catalysis, stability of microbial catalysts, and microbial function in extreme environments.
